not all who wander are lost- especially if you wander spinning poetry and musing about the deep and nerdy things of this world...

somewherethats-green:

everyone just likes to talk about how “chill” arnold was and just reminisce on the days when they used to watch hey arnold when they were 7 and how good it was etc etc but it’s not until you watch it later on when you begin to realize that it’s not a good show purely…

Thank you for this. I also re-watched this show this summer and was struck by how realistically it captures people of different walks of life and issues kids face. I mean, poor Helga is neglected by her parents, Arnold is parentless, they’re in the inner city and facing all the problems associated with that environment. And dang it, any show that covers the peer pressures to be “girly” and animal abuse and has an opera musical episode is just pure win.

Reflections on Hey Arnold and Femininity

I’m on Season 1 episode 4 right now and I’m feeling sorry for Helga, who is not “feminine” enough to be invited to a sleepover and is rejected by guys so she gives herself a makeover to fit in. It’s just another reason to love this show that is able to portray Helga, who is normally a obsessive jerk, as someone worthy of sympathy. That moment where she overhears all the girls making fun of her, even her best friend…

It makes me think of what exactly the definition of what “feminine” is? Was my sister in her baggy T-shirt stage any less feminine than me who have always liked wearing skirts? I think, just like Helga figures out by the end of the episode, that there’s a wide spectrum of kinds of girls and no one type should be elevated above another. When I was in elementary school, most of the girls played jump rope and the boys played kickball. It was hard for me to first get the boys’ respect enough so they would let me play. I was perceived as a “special” kind of girl because I could do “boy things” too. Now I look back and wonder why people make such divisions as to what is a “girly” thing and what things boys can do.

I know that if I ever have a daughter, I’ll be right there encouraging her whatever she wants to do, whether that’s kickball, jump rope or both. And I’ll be handing down my Barbies and my Star Wars action figures ;-)

On TinyChat a while back before the ‘firebending crush’ clip was released on Korra Nation there was some sort of comparison to Mako being like Helga with a crush on Korra, and I couldn’t let that go because I really wanted to draw Mako in a pink dress and bow.

Krystal and I came up with the rest of the cast list that I’m too lazy to draw.

- Tenzin and Pema = Grandpa and Grandma

- Jinora = Phoebe

- Ikki = Timberly

- Meelo = Brainy (he just likes chomping on Mako’s scarf/bow)

- Hasook = Harold

- Asami/Tahno = Rhonda (Tahno’s an option because of amusing reasons)

- Principal Wartz = Chief Beifong

- Wolfgang = Amon (wears a hockey mask with marker all over it)

I will just sit here

and cry

because this is so perfect

because your art is so freaking perfect
